When to seek medical advice?
A medical consultation is necessary if:
- The temperature exceeds 102°F (39°C).
- The temperature does not drop despite taking medication.
- The baby is less than three months old.
- If the fever is not tolerated, worsens or is accompanied by any other abnormal or worrisome symptoms: drowsiness, dizziness, vomiting, dehydration, confusion, convulsions, difficulty breathing, severe headache, abdominal pain…
- Fever persists for more than 48-72 hours for no apparent reason.
- If the fever occurs in a person with a weakened immune system , after surgery or after a trip to a tropical country: all these situations justify the search for specific causes.
- In case of pregnancy: fever in a pregnant woman can be potentially serious. In fact, when left untreated, a very high fever can lead to premature delivery or termination of pregnancy.
In conclusion, fever is a natural reaction of the immune system to pathogens and usually disappears when the underlying disease improves. Consider a mild fever as an indication that you need rest. However, if you have a fever with alarming signs, it is best to consult a doctor.
