Type 24: Chronic Migraine
Chronic migraines are characterized by headache pain that occurs on 15 or more days per month for at least three months. These headaches can be extremely disabling, significantly impacting an individual’s quality of life and daily functioning.
Treatment for chronic migraines focuses on managing pain and preventing future attacks. Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications, such as triptans or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may be used to alleviate pain during an attack. Preventive medications, like beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, or antidepressants, can also be prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of chronic migraines.
Lifestyle modifications, including stress management techniques, regular exercise, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, can help prevent chronic migraines. Identifying and avoiding personal migraine triggers, such as certain foods, hormonal changes, or environmental factors, is also crucial in reducing the frequency of attacks. (24)
