Type 7: Post-Traumatic Headaches
Post-traumatic headaches occur following head or neck injuries, such as concussions or whiplash. These headaches can manifest immediately after the injury or develop over time, lasting for several weeks or even months. The pain is often described as dull, aching, or pressure-like and can be accompanied by other symptoms, such as dizziness, memory problems, or difficulty concentrating.
Treatment for post-traumatic headaches focuses on addressing the underlying injury and managing pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, or antidepressants, may be used to alleviate pain. Physical therapy or occupational therapy can also be helpful in restoring function and promoting healing.
Rest and gradual return to normal activities are essential components of recovery from head or neck injuries. It is crucial to follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations regarding activity levels and any necessary modifications to prevent further injury or exacerbation of symptoms. (7)
