Heart (Cardiac) Catheterization

Risks and Complications

This examination is not considered to be a risky one. However, there is always a chance of complications, even though it is highly unlikely. For example, there may be inflammation or hematoma at the puncture site. In rare cases, allergic reactions to the contrast medium may occur. Serious complications are very rare and occur mainly in emergency patients and those with serious illnesses. There is a risk of heart arrhythmias, heart attacks, blood clots, shock and convulsions. However, the chances of any of these complications happening are extremely small.
