Sign 7: Chest Pain or Discomfort
Chest discomfort or pain is a common symptom of various heart conditions, cardiomyopathy included. With this condition, chest pain usually occurs due to inadequate blood supply to the heart muscle, a situation known as ischemia. In the context of cardiomyopathy, the heart’s compromised ability to pump can cause this lack of oxygen-rich blood.
Chest discomfort associated with cardiomyopathy may feel like a squeezing pressure, fullness, or pain in the center of your chest. Some people also describe it as feeling like indigestion or heartburn. The intensity of this pain can vary; it might be mild and come and go, or it could be constant and intense.
What makes this symptom especially concerning is that it can often be confused with other less serious conditions, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. However, any persistent chest pain or discomfort should be considered a medical emergency.
If you experience this symptom, especially if it’s accompanied by other signs such as shortness of breath or fatigue, seek immediate medical help. While it could be due to a variety of reasons, chest pain is a common symptom of cardiomyopathy and other serious heart conditions and must be evaluated promptly. (7)
