Symptom 10: Decreased Alertness or Difficulty Concentrating

Decreased alertness or difficulty concentrating are often overlooked symptoms of left-sided heart failure. When the heart cannot pump blood effectively, less oxygen reaches the brain, which can impair cognitive functions. This may present as confusion, difficulty focusing, or short-term memory lapses.
Patients might find themselves more forgetful, or struggling to keep track of simple tasks or conversations. These cognitive issues, often coupled with disrupted sleep due to nocturia and breathing difficulties, can greatly impact one’s quality of life.
However, such symptoms are often attributed to age or stress, making them easily dismissable. But when accompanied by other signs of left-sided heart failure, they should not be overlooked. Always consult with a healthcare provider if you notice these cognitive changes, as they could be indicative of a heart condition or other serious health problems. (10)
