Cause 4. Parasitic Infections: A Global Concern
Parasites, microorganisms that live off other organisms, can also cause myocarditis. One notable example is Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. Predominantly found in Central and South America, Chagas disease can lead to chronic heart disease, including myocarditis, if left untreated.
Toxoplasma gondii, another parasite, can lead to Toxoplasmosis, an infection that can cause myocarditis in severe cases. The parasite is usually transmitted through undercooked meat, contaminated water, or through contact with feces of infected cats.
The global distribution and varying modes of transmission of these parasites underscore the importance of preventive measures, early detection, and proper treatment to avoid myocarditis and other complications. (4)
