Symptom 17: Unusual or Persistent Heartburn: A Deceptive Symptom
Heartburn is a common symptom experienced by many, often after a spicy or heavy meal. It’s characterized by a burning sensation in the chest, just behind the breastbone, and is usually the result of acid reflux. However, persistent or unusual heartburn could be a symptom of a heart attack.
During a heart attack, discomfort or pain is typically felt in the chest. However, this pain can sometimes feel similar to heartburn. It’s often described as a burning, fullness, or pressure in the chest, which could easily be mistaken for acid reflux.
The key to differentiating heartburn from a heart attack is understanding the associated symptoms and the context. Heartburn usually occurs after eating or lying down and can often be relieved by antacids. Heart attack symptoms, on the other hand, are more likely to be accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, lightheadedness, and nausea.(17)
