Symptom 2. Persistent Coughing or Wheezing: A Symptom You Cannot Brush Off
If you’ve been brushing off a persistent cough or wheezing as a residual cold symptom, you might want to think again. Persistent coughing or wheezing is another sign of heart failure, specifically related to fluid build-up in the lungs.
In the case of heart failure, fluid backs up in the lungs because the heart isn’t able to keep up with the blood flow. When your lungs are congested with fluid, it can result in a hacking cough or wheezing, similar to what you might experience with bronchitis or asthma. The cough can produce phlegm that is white or pinkish from blood.
The persistence of the cough or wheezing is a key distinguishing factor. While a cough related to a common cold or respiratory infection should resolve within a few weeks, a cough associated with heart failure is likely to persist or even worsen over time.
This symptom, like others related to heart failure, may be more pronounced during physical activity or when lying down. If you’ve been experiencing a relentless cough or wheezing, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. (2)
