Symptom 4: Rapid Weight Gain: An Overlooked Symptom of CHF
Rapid weight gain is another symptom of CHF, which can often go overlooked. This weight gain is a result of the body retaining excess fluid, leading to an increase in body weight.
An individual with CHF might notice that their weight fluctuates significantly. They might gain several pounds in a short period, especially if their CHF is poorly controlled. This weight gain is typically more pronounced in the abdominal region and the lower extremities, where fluid tends to accumulate.
The individual might also notice a corresponding increase in abdominal girth. This is due to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity, a condition known as ascites. Ascites can cause discomfort and bloating and may impact the individual’s ability to eat or breathe comfortably. (4)
