Another prevalent symptom associated with CHF is experiencing shortness of breath. This symptom may present during physical exertion, such as climbing stairs or walking. As CHF progresses, however, shortness of breath may occur even during periods of rest or while lying down.

This symptom arises as fluid accumulates in the lungs, a condition known as pulmonary edema. The excess fluid interferes with normal breathing, leading to a sensation of breathlessness. Shortness of breath can also be due to the heart’s inability to deliver adequate oxygen-rich blood to the body’s tissues.

Experiencing shortness of breath can be particularly alarming, and should not be dismissed as mere aging or lack of fitness. If the symptom is persistent and exacerbated by exertion or lying down, it could be a sign of CHF and necessitates immediate medical consultation. (3)
