Sign 9: Increased Need to Urinate at Night
An often-overlooked sign of CHF is an increased need to urinate during the night, known as nocturia. Although there can be many reasons for nocturia, when combined with other symptoms on this list, it could be indicative of CHF.
When the heart fails to pump effectively, fluid can accumulate in the body. During the day, fluid can collect in the legs and ankles. However, when lying down to sleep, this fluid can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and eventually reach the kidneys, causing an increased need to urinate.
Although nocturia is a fairly common symptom in older adults, a sudden or significant increase in the frequency of nighttime urination should not be ignored. If combined with other CHF symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. (9)
