Hepatitis C can, at times, present itself in ways that aren’t immediately linked to the liver in our minds. The sudden, inexplicable swelling in the legs and abdomen is one such manifestation. This symptom, termed edema, is an accumulation of excess fluid in body tissues and can be a clear sign of liver dysfunction.

The liver produces a protein called albumin that keeps the blood in our veins. When hepatitis C damages the liver, albumin production can decline. As a result, blood seeps out into surrounding tissues, causing swelling. Furthermore, a compromised liver can lead to portal hypertension, causing fluid buildup in the abdomen, known as ascites.

While the swelling might seem superficial, it carries deeper implications. The excess fluid can cause discomfort and restrict mobility, making simple activities strenuous. In cases of ascites, the fluid can press against the stomach and lungs, leading to appetite loss and breathing difficulties, respectively.

The sudden change in one’s physical appearance due to swelling can be emotionally taxing. This alteration might lead to feelings of self-consciousness, affecting interpersonal interactions and daily routines. Acknowledging the psychological facets of edema is pivotal for a holistic approach to hepatitis C treatment. (8)
