Causes And Risk Factors
There are two types of hypertension, divided by their origins.
Primary hypertension is idiopathic, which means that its causes are uncertain or unknown. However, there are factors that can increase the risk of developing this condition:
- Family history of hypertension;
- Aging;
- Obesity;
- Diabetes;
- Vitaming deficiency;
- Smoking;
- Excessive drinking;
- Lack of exercise;
- Increased salt/sodium intake.
When a direct cause for high blood pressure can be identified, the condition is described as secondary hypertension. Known causes include:
- Kidney disease;
- Tumors;
- Endocrine diseases;
- Medication side effect (such as birth control pills).
