Hyponatremia: risk factors
Many risk factors can lead to a lack of sodium. This is particularly the case for:
- Age: Older people may have more factors that contribute to hyponatremia, including age-related changes, taking certain medications, and being more likely to have a chronic disease that disrupts the body’s sodium balance;
- Kidney diseases (for example, Addison’s disease);
- Liver cirrhosis;
- Respiratory failure;
- Endocrine imbalance;
- Cancer;
- Neuropsychiatric disorders;
- Diuretics, antidepressants or painkillers;
- Ecstasy: this amphetamine increases the risk of serious and even fatal cases of hyponatremia.;
These risk factors should therefore be taken into account and monitored to avoid sodium deficiency.
