How can hyponatremia be prevented?
For people with a higher risk of hyponatremia, regular medical monitoring is an effective prevention tool. In addition, certain precautions will help regulate water volumes, particularly in hot weather:
- Give preference to eating foods containing water (fruit, vegetables, soups, etc.), do not over hydrate with water alone;
- Regularly wet the skin and ventilate properly, especially for the elderly, whose perspiration mechanism is impaired;
- Limit being outside in the hottest hours of the day;
- Drinking with food, to promote sodium intake;
- Split meals, to ensure a regular intake of sodium throughout the day;
- Have the doctor re-evaluate low-salt diets and current treatments (particularly diuretics) to judge the relevance of maintaining or adjusting the doses during hot weather.
