6. The Role of Timely Treatment in Transverse Myelitis
In the management of any disease, timing is everything, and Transverse Myelitis is no exception. The inflammation of the spinal cord, if left unchecked, can lead to permanent nerve damage. Therefore, prompt and appropriate treatment is crucial to minimize long-term impact and maximize recovery.
The first line of treatment typically involves corticosteroids, medications that help reduce inflammation. These drugs work by dampening the overactive immune response, thus reducing the inflammation in the spinal cord. However, the treatment isn’t without its challenges. The high doses required can lead to side effects, and not everyone responds to steroid treatment, necessitating alternative treatment strategies.
For those who don’t respond to corticosteroids, plasmapheresis may be considered. This procedure involves removing some of the patient’s blood, separating the plasma (which contains the immune cells causing the inflammation), and returning the rest of the blood back to the patient. While this can be a more intensive treatment, it can be a game-changer for those unresponsive to steroids.
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy is another treatment option. This involves administering a solution of antibodies from donors, which can help modulate the immune response.
