Tip 5: Limit Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption
Excessive alcohol and tobacco use can have a negative impact on kidney function. Alcohol is a diuretic, which can lead to dehydration and put extra strain on your kidneys. Heavy alcohol consumption can also cause high blood pressure and liver disease, both of which can contribute to kidney damage. It’s recommended to limit alcohol intake to no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco, can also damage your kidneys. Smoking narrows blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the kidneys and impairing their ability to filter waste effectively. Quitting smoking can significantly reduce your risk of developing kidney disease and improve your overall health. (5)
