8. Refined Grains Roadblock: Opting for Whole Grains
The eighth food group to be cautious of when following a renal diet is refined grains. Refined grains, such as white bread, white rice, and regular pasta, are stripped of their essential nutrients and fiber during processing. Consuming too many refined grains can lead to blood sugar spikes and put additional stress on your kidneys.
To overcome the refined grains roadblock, opt for whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole wheat pasta. Whole grains are nutrient-dense and high in fiber, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and support kidney health.
Be cautious of misleading terms like “multigrain” or “wheat” that may not necessarily indicate a whole grain product. Look for the Whole Grain Stamp or check the ingredient list for whole grain ingredients.
In addition to incorporating whole grains, consider adding more fruits, vegetables, and legumes to your diet to increase your fiber intake. However, be mindful of the potassium and phosphorus content in these foods, as previously discussed, and choose low-potassium and low-phosphorus options. (8)
