9. Alcohol Alert: Limiting Your Intake
The ninth food group to avoid when following a renal diet is alcohol. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can lead to dehydration, high blood pressure, and kidney damage. In addition, alcohol can interfere with certain medications, making them less effective at controlling blood pressure and other kidney-related issues.
To stay on track with your renal diet, limit your alcohol intake or avoid it altogether. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. The American Heart Association recommends no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men.
When socializing, opt for non-alcoholic alternatives like sparkling water, herbal tea, or mocktails. These options can help you stay hydrated without the negative effects of alcohol on your kidneys. (9)
