Symptom 5: Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath is another symptom that may be experienced by individuals with ESRD. This can result from fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema) or anemia, both of which are common in ESRD patients.
As previously mentioned, the kidneys play a critical role in regulating fluid balance in the body. When they fail to function properly, excess fluid can accumulate in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Additionally, anemia can cause shortness of breath, as the body struggles to deliver enough oxygen to tissues and organs due to the lack of red blood cells.
Addressing the underlying causes of shortness of breath, such as fluid retention and anemia, is essential in managing this symptom. Treatment options may include diuretics to reduce fluid retention, medications or therapies to address anemia, and, in some cases, dialysis. (5)
