16. Shellfish – A Seafood Delicacy with Hidden Risks for Your Kidneys
Seafood is often considered a healthier alternative to meat, and for good reason. It’s a good source of lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins and minerals. But not all seafood is created equal. In fact, shellfish can pose potential risks to your kidneys.
The problem with shellfish, which includes foods like shrimp, crabs, oysters, and lobsters, is their high content of purines. These compounds are broken down into uric acid in the body. A high intake of purines can lead to an increase in uric acid, which can form crystals and cause kidney stones.
Additionally, shellfish are often prepared with butter or deep-fried, which adds to their saturated fat content. As we’ve discussed earlier, excess saturated fat can lead to a variety of health issues, including a strain on your kidneys.
Then there’s the issue of sodium. Like many other foods on this list, shellfish often contain added salt, especially when they’re processed or canned. This added sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, which can, over time, harm your kidneys.
This isn’t to say that you should avoid shellfish altogether. When consumed in moderation, they can be part of a balanced diet. But it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and make informed decisions when it comes to your dietary choices. After all, the well-being of your kidneys depends on it. (16)
