18. Processed Meats – A Sodium and Preservative Overload
Processed meats like sausages, ham, and bacon are ubiquitous in our diets, whether they’re in our sandwiches, pizzas, or weekend barbecues. While these foods may be tasty and convenient, they can have serious implications for your kidney health.
One of the main issues with processed meats is their high sodium content. As we’ve discussed before, excessive sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, which can put a strain on your kidneys. Processed meats are often cured, canned, or packaged with a lot of salt to enhance their flavor and prolong their shelf life, making them a significant source of dietary sodium.
In addition to sodium, processed meats are often packed with preservatives like nitrates and nitrites. Some research suggests that these compounds can cause damage to your kidneys. They are thought to induce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which can contribute to kidney damage over time.
Processed meats also tend to be high in unhealthy fats and cholesterol, which can contribute to conditions like obesity and heart disease. Both of these health conditions can indirectly affect the health of your kidneys.
Opting for fresh, lean meats instead of processed ones can be a healthier choice. These alternatives are typically lower in sodium and don’t contain the harmful preservatives found in processed meats. Plus, they provide high-quality protein, which can be beneficial for your kidneys when consumed in moderation. (18)
