Kidney Stones: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Kidney Stone Symptoms

Kidney stones usually don`t cause any discomfort and are asymptomatic for a long time. If they block urine flow, reflux develops (a reverse flow of urine into the kidney), which leads to the development of kidney swelling and severe pain.

The first symptoms to appear usually are:

  • acute, severe and persistent pain. It may also come in waves on the side and back, below the ribs, sometimes accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting;
  • pain radiating down to the lower abdomen and groin;
  • burning sensation or pain when urinating;
  • occasional admixture of blood in the urine, pink, red or brown urine

Patients suffering from kidney stones also describe these symptoms:

  • cloudy or foul-smelling urine;
  • a persistent need to urinate, urinating more often than usual or urinating in small amounts;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • fever and chills.
