6. Lung Involvement: Breathing Challenges and Longevity with Sjögren’s
The lungs, often overlooked, play a pivotal role in the life expectancy of individuals with Sjögren’s syndrome. Several pulmonary complications can arise, each with its implications on longevity.
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is perhaps the most prominent of these issues. Characterized by inflammation and scarring of lung tissue, ILD can lead to reduced lung function. This means less oxygen for the body’s cells, impacting overall vitality and energy levels. Over time, if unchecked, ILD can become a significant barrier to daily activities, compromising quality of life.
Bronchiectasis, a condition where the airways in the lungs become damaged and widen, is another potential lung complication in Sjögren’s patients. This widening can lead to infections, breathing difficulties, and a host of other complications. Moreover, persistent dry cough and recurrent respiratory infections, while less severe than other symptoms, can still degrade life quality over time. (6)
