Hypoglycemia unawareness.
Symptoms of low blood sugar, though unpleasant, actually help us realize it’s time to take action to bring blood glucose up to a safe level. In some cases, however, hypoglycemia can be asymptomatic. This is called hypoglycemia unawareness and is an extremely dangerous condition, because it puts you at increased risk for severe low blood sugar reactions. You are also less likely to be awakened from sleep at night. Such patients need to pay special attention to blood sugar check-ups, especially before dangerous tasks such as driving.
Hypoglycemia unawareness is most common for people who:
- Often have low blood sugar episodes (they stop sensing early signs of hypoglycemia);
- Have had diabetes for a long time;
- Tightly control their diabetes (due to increased chances of having low blood sugar reactions).
