Symptom 10. Anemia
Anemia, a condition characterized by a lack of healthy red blood cells, is another common symptom of lupus nephritis. Anemia can cause fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and pale skin, affecting a patient’s quality of life and overall health.
In lupus nephritis, anemia may result from various factors, such as inflammation affecting the production of red blood cells, impaired kidney function reducing the production of erythropoietin (a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production), or side effects of medications used to treat lupus.
To manage anemia, healthcare providers may recommend dietary changes, such as increasing the intake of iron-rich foods or taking iron supplements. In some cases, medications or blood transfusions may be necessary to address severe anemia. It is crucial for patients with lupus nephritis to work closely with their healthcare team to develop a treatment plan that addresses the underlying causes of anemia and improves their overall health.
