Symptom 2. Foamy Urine
The presence of excessive protein in the urine (proteinuria) can cause the urine to appear foamy or frothy. Proteinuria is a significant indicator of lupus nephritis, as it suggests that the kidneys are not properly filtering waste products from the blood.
When kidneys are healthy, they filter waste and excess fluids from the bloodstream while retaining essential proteins. However, in lupus nephritis, the kidneys’ filtering system becomes damaged, allowing protein to leak into the urine. As a result, the urine may appear foamy due to the presence of these proteins.
Proteinuria may not cause any noticeable symptoms in the early stages, but as the condition progresses, it can lead to further complications such as swelling in the extremities and high blood pressure. Therefore, it is essential for patients with lupus to regularly monitor their urine for signs of proteinuria and consult their healthcare provider if they notice any changes.
To diagnose proteinuria, a healthcare provider may perform a urine test, known as a urinalysis. This test can help determine the amount of protein present in the urine and inform treatment decisions. Treatment options for proteinuria may include medications to control blood pressure and reduce inflammation, as well as dietary modifications to support kidney health. (2)
