Symptom 2: Feeding Difficulties – The Silent Struggle
Feeding difficulties in infants are a telltale sign that something is not quite right. While many factors could lead to feeding challenges, when seen alongside other symptoms, it could signal the onset of Krabbe disease.
This symptom often presents as a progressive decline in the baby’s feeding patterns. An infant who once had a hearty appetite might start showing signs of disinterest in feeds or face difficulties during feeding times. The issue might start with simple things such as taking longer to finish a feed or showing signs of discomfort during feeding.
Over time, these feeding challenges may escalate. The infant might start refusing feeds altogether, or the parents may notice that the baby is having difficulty swallowing. This is often accompanied by significant weight loss or failure to gain weight appropriately for their age, which in itself can lead to further complications.
These feeding difficulties are not isolated problems. They are usually tied in with other symptoms of Krabbe disease, such as changes in behavior or muscle tone. For instance, the baby might become unusually fussy or irritable during feedings or show signs of muscle weakness or stiffness, making feeding a struggle. (2)
