2. Decreased Interest.
The second core symptom is decreased interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy (also referred to as anhedonia). Anhedonia is not the same as apathy. The key difference is that apathy means a lack of interest and motivation, whereas anhedonia is more a lack of feeling, mainly a feeling of pleasure. A person will normally be unable to experience both conditions at the same time.
Anhedonia can be divided into two types:
- Physical anhedonia, in which we do not experience sensory pleasures from things like food, sex, or favorite pastimes;
- Social anhedonia, in which we tend to experience decreased pleasure from social interactions (for example, losing interest in joining a get-together with friends whose company used to be enjoyable). [3]
