5. Psychomotor Issues.

Psychomotor skills are a combination of our movement (motor skills) and thinking abilities. This includes balance and coordination.

With depression, it is possible to experience either of the two types of psychomotor disorders:

  • Psychomotor agitation: excessive physical activity associated with a feeling of constant tension in the body. This activity is usually purposeless and represents repetitive movements such as pacing, fidgeting, hand-wringing and the inability to stay still.
  • Psychomotor retardation: the opposite of agitation, meaning slowed speech, thinking and body movements. Having these symptoms can hugely interfere with everyday life, because it makes common things, like communicating, writing and cooking extremely difficult. [3]
