8. Emotional Depth: Feeling the World in High Definition
The stereotype that individuals with Asperger’s are emotionally shallow or unfeeling couldn’t be further from the truth. While they may have difficulty expressing or identifying emotions in conventional ways, their emotional landscape is often rich and complex, comparable to watching a movie in high definition where every nuance is heightened.
Ironically, it’s this depth of emotion that can make emotional expression so challenging. The complexity and intensity of what they feel can be overwhelming, making it difficult to articulate these emotions in socially acceptable ways. You can think of it as having a rich, complex inner world with limited means to externalize it.
However, once you’ve gained their trust and entered their emotional circle, the depth of their feelings is unmistakable. They are often incredibly loyal friends, and their love, once given, is deep and unwavering. This is not the shallow puddle that some mistake it to be; it’s a deep ocean, teeming with life but also fraught with undercurrents. (8)
