Symptom 15. Dental Issues and Oral Health: The Unseen Consequences of Anorexia
Individuals with anorexia nervosa may experience a range of dental issues and oral health problems as a result of their disorder. Malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies can weaken the tooth enamel, leading to an increased risk of cavities, tooth sensitivity, and tooth decay. Additionally, frequent vomiting, which is common in individuals with anorexia who engage in purging behaviors, can expose the teeth to stomach acid, further eroding the tooth enamel and causing dental problems.
Gum disease and gingivitis are also potential oral health issues for individuals with anorexia nervosa, as poor nutrition can compromise the immune system’s ability to fight off bacterial infections in the mouth. This can result in inflammation, bleeding gums, and, in severe cases, tooth loss.(15)
