8. Lead Poisoning
Lead poisoning is a lesser-known cause of hypochromic microcytic anemia. Exposure to high levels of lead can interfere with the enzymes involved in hemoglobin synthesis, leading to anemia. Additionally, lead can also affect the bone marrow’s ability to produce red blood cells.
Common sources of lead exposure include lead-based paint, contaminated soil, and lead-contaminated water. Treatment for lead poisoning-related anemia involves addressing the underlying exposure and may include chelation therapy to remove lead from the body, as well as iron supplementation if necessary.
Preventing lead exposure is key to avoiding anemia and other health complications associated with lead poisoning. This may involve testing for lead in the home, particularly in older homes with lead-based paint, and ensuring safe drinking water sources. (6)
