Symptom 5: Swollen Skin Around the Sores
Inflammation is the body’s typical response to injury or infection. So, when you find that the skin surrounding your mouth ulcer is swollen, it’s your body’s way of signaling that something’s amiss. The skin might not only be elevated but could also be tender to the touch.
This swelling can exacerbate the discomfort associated with mouth ulcers. A swollen patch inside the mouth can create an unfamiliar feeling, making speaking or eating a bit more awkward. It’s almost as if there’s a constant reminder of the ulcer every time you move your mouth.
Moreover, the inflammation can sometimes be accompanied by a warmth or even a throbbing sensation. This can be particularly distressing if the ulcer is located in a spot that’s frequently disturbed, like the side of the tongue or close to the teeth. (5)
