Nausea Guide: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and When to Seek Help

How to relieve nausea?

  • Eat several small, light meals throughout the day, rather than 3 large meals, especially if you feel nauseous after meals at night.
  • Regularly drink small amounts of lightly sweetened or lightly salted water in small amounts if the case is gastrointestinal illness.
  • Resting and avoiding unpleasant odors can help reduce the queasiness. Getting fresh air regularly helps.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, greasy, spicy and sweet food.
  • In the event of a migraine, calm and darkness help soothe both nausea and headache.
  • Get enough rest if your nausea is accompanied by fatigue.
  • Do not go to bed right after a meal. Nausea tends to get worse if you lie down right after eating.

If your nausea causes vomiting and diarrhea, it may be gastroenteritis. It is important to stay hydrated and eat carefully. You can begin to slowly reintroduce food starting with rice, potatoes, carrots, pasta and bananas, which are constipating.

When to seek medical attention?

  • If nausea persists for more than 48 hours without apparent reasons, medical consultation is recommended in order to detect possible illnesses such as a stomach ulcer or an intestinal obstruction;
  • If the symptoms seem to be related to a specific medication;
  • If vomiting is accompanied by a total interruption of transit (no stool), medical advice is strongly recommended;
  • Overall, high-risk groups (infants, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems) are advised to consult a doctor as soon as symptoms appear.

Never hesitate to seek medical attention. Stay safe and healthy!
