Symptom 3: Cognitive Decline

As MLD proceeds, it’s not only the physical faculties that come under siege. Cognitive decline is a common symptom, often overlooked due to its subtle onset. In the beginning, it may manifest as minor forgetfulness or confusion. Simple things like forgetting where the car keys are or struggling to remember an acquaintance’s name can be the first indications.

As time progresses, the cognitive issues extend beyond simple forgetfulness. More complex cognitive functions, like problem-solving or planning, can become challenging. Tasks that involve multiple steps or require keeping track of various elements may suddenly seem overwhelming.

Remember, we’re not talking about the occasional memory lapse or the normal cognitive slowing that can occur with aging. This is a consistent, gradual decline that doesn’t get better with rest or time.

This cognitive impairment is the result of the same sulfatide buildup that leads to muscle weakness and motor skill degradation. The fatty substances accumulate in the brain’s nerve cells, disrupting their normal functioning and leading to cognitive decline. (3)
