Symptom 7: Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction – An Uncomfortable Reality
One of the less discussed, yet fairly common, symptoms of NMOSD is bowel and bladder dysfunction. Damage to the nerves controlling these functions can lead to symptoms like constipation, urinary incontinence, or urinary urgency, causing significant distress and impacting the quality of life.
This symptom isn’t exclusive to the later stages of the disease. It might present itself early on, sometimes even before other symptoms make their appearance. Given the sensitive nature of these symptoms, individuals might hesitate to discuss them, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
The impact of this symptom extends beyond the physical discomfort. It can impose significant psychological stress, causing feelings of embarrassment and social anxiety. It might also limit the individual’s willingness to participate in social activities, leading to isolation. (7)
