Symptom 4: Irregular Heartbeats – A Cause for Concern
Irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias, are another common symptom associated with dilated cardiomyopathy. This symptom may present as the heart beating too fast, too slow, or in an irregular pattern. In the context of dilated cardiomyopathy, these irregularities can offer valuable insight into the health of the heart.
The human heart beats in a regular rhythm, coordinating the filling and emptying of its chambers to ensure efficient blood circulation. In dilated cardiomyopathy, however, the enlarged and weakened heart chambers can disrupt this rhythm, leading to arrhythmias.
These irregularities may initially be infrequent and almost unnoticeable. However, as the condition progresses, arrhythmias can become more frequent and disruptive. They may present as palpitations – a feeling that the heart is racing, pounding, or fluttering. In some instances, they may even cause dizziness or fainting spells.
Although everyone may experience occasional heart palpitations, persistent irregular heartbeats warrant medical attention. They not only indicate a potential heart disorder, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, but can also lead to severe complications if left unaddressed. (4)
