5. Gastrointestinal Complications: The Digestive Dilemma in hEDS
Digestive troubles might not be the first symptom that springs to mind with hEDS, but they’re undeniably significant. From acid reflux to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the gamut of gastrointestinal issues is wide.
The connective tissue abnormalities in hEDS don’t restrict themselves to the skin or joints. The entire body, including the digestive system, relies on these tissues for structure and function. Altered motility patterns can lead to symptoms like constipation or diarrhea.
Then there’s the issue of visceral pain sensitivity. The internal organs of those with hEDS might be more sensitive to pain. A simple stomach cramp might be amplified, leading to disproportionate discomfort. (5)
