Symptom 6. Persistent Cough: A Frequently Overlooked Sign of Stage 2 Thyroid Cancer
A persistent cough that doesn’t seem to resolve can also be a symptom of stage 2 thyroid cancer. This cough is usually dry and not associated with a cold or other respiratory condition. It can be particularly noticeable when it doesn’t respond to cough suppressants or inhalers.
The reason for this symptom is similar to the cause of voice changes and shortness of breath. As the thyroid tumor grows, it can apply pressure to the windpipe or even the nerves that control coughing, resulting in a chronic, unexplained cough.
However, a persistent cough is a common symptom for many health conditions, including allergies, acid reflux, and respiratory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). So, a cough alone may not immediately raise a red flag for thyroid cancer. (6)
