11. Edema: The Swelling That Spells Discomfort

Edema refers to the swelling that results from fluid accumulation in tissues. In mycosis fungoides, it might manifest as puffiness, skin that feels tight or looks shiny, and indentations that remain after pressing the skin.
The inflammatory response can increase the permeability of blood vessels, causing them to leak fluid into surrounding tissues. Moreover, tumors or enlarged lymph nodes might impede normal fluid drainage, exacerbating the swelling.
Edema is most common in the legs, ankles, and feet, but any part of the body can be affected. The severity varies, with some experiencing mild puffiness and others having pronounced swelling.
Elevating the affected limb and wearing compression garments can help. Diuretics might be prescribed in some cases. It’s crucial to monitor for infection, especially if the skin over the edema breaks down. (11)
