6. Persistent Cough or Wheezing – The Unseen Connection to an Enlarged Heart
A persistent cough or wheezing can often be associated with an enlarged heart. This may sound surprising, as these symptoms are typically linked with respiratory conditions. However, an enlarged heart can lead to fluid build-up in the lungs, a condition known as pulmonary edema, which results in a chronic cough or wheezing.
The cough is often dry, but it can sometimes produce pink, frothy mucus. The wheezing, on the other hand, is a whistling sound when you breathe, indicating that your airways are narrowed or blocked. Both symptoms might be more noticeable when you lie down or during physical activity.
These symptoms may be subtle initially, but they tend to worsen over time as the heart’s function deteriorates and fluid continues to accumulate in the lungs. So, while a cough or wheezing may seem like a minor inconvenience, it could be a signal from your heart, warranting a thorough medical examination.
