Symptom 8. Disturbed Check Reflex: A Disrupted Safety Net
The check reflex, also known as the rebound phenomenon, is a protective mechanism that prevents excessive motion by stopping a muscle’s contraction when resistance is suddenly removed. In cerebellar ataxia, this reflex may be disturbed, leading to an inability to stop a movement promptly, resulting in excessive, unintended motion.
This symptom once again highlights the cerebellum’s role as a coordinator and regulator of voluntary movements. The cerebellum helps fine-tune the force and range of muscle contractions, ensuring that our movements are precise and well controlled. When cerebellar function is impaired, this precise control falters, disrupting the check reflex.
A disturbed check reflex can introduce difficulties in performing daily activities. Tasks that require control of force, such as pouring a glass of water or applying makeup, can become challenging. The loss of control can lead to spills, messes, or accidents, causing frustration and potentially reducing an individual’s independence. (8)
