Symptom 8: Skin Infections
Individuals with severe atopic dermatitis are more prone to skin infections, as the compromised skin barrier allows bacteria, viruses, and fungi to enter more easily. Common skin infections include impetigo, cellulitis, and fungal infections, which can cause additional symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, and pus-filled sores.
To prevent and manage skin infections, it’s essential to keep the affected areas clean and dry, using gentle cleansers and avoiding irritants that may worsen the condition. Your healthcare provider may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics, antiviral, or antifungal medications to treat any underlying infections.
Maintaining proper skincare, including regular moisturizing and the use of barrier creams, can also help protect the skin and reduce the risk of infection. (8)
