Symptom 4: Sensitivity to Light
As shingles progresses, a child may begin to display a heightened sensitivity to light, technically termed as ‘photophobia’. This isn’t about merely preferring a dimly lit room; it’s an almost painful aversion to bright lights.
The onset of photophobia can be particularly distressing for children. They might squint, shut their eyes tightly, or even become irritable when exposed to bright light. Some might refuse to go outside during the day, while others might shy away from indoor lights.
But why does this sensitivity occur? While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, it’s believed that the virus’s impact on the nervous system can lead to this heightened sensitivity. The eyes, being directly linked to the nervous system, become more reactive to stimuli, in this case, light. This symptom, while distressing, usually wanes as the condition improves. It’s all about managing it effectively in the interim, offering relief and understanding to the affected child. (4)
