Symptom 3. Pale Skin and Pale Mucous Membranes
Sideroblastic anemia can cause the skin and mucous membranes, such as the gums and the insides of the eyelids, to appear pale. This paleness is due to the decreased number of red blood cells in the body, which leads to reduced blood flow to the skin and other tissues.
Individuals with sideroblastic anemia may also notice that their nails become pale, brittle, or spoon-shaped (known as koilonychia). This can be a significant concern, as it may indicate more severe anemia that requires prompt medical attention.
The paleness of the skin and mucous membranes can also be accompanied by other skin-related symptoms, such as itchiness or dryness. These symptoms can further contribute to the overall discomfort experienced by those with sideroblastic anemia.
As with other symptoms discussed so far, pale skin and mucous membranes can also be indicative of other medical conditions.
