Symptom 6. Shortness of Breath: An Unexpected Connection
Shortness of breath or dyspnea is a symptom that you wouldn’t typically associate with a condition related to the thyroid. However, when it comes to PSCCT, this symptom can indeed make an appearance.
This unexpected symptom results from the location of the thyroid gland, which sits close to the trachea or windpipe, the main route for air to enter and exit the lungs. As a PSCCT tumor grows, it can compress the trachea, leading to difficulties in breathing.
In a study published in the International Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers found that tracheal obstruction caused by PSCCT could lead to dyspnea. This symptom might present as difficulty catching your breath, especially during exertion, or a feeling of suffocation. (6)
