6. Respiratory Issues: The Invisible Chain
Breath – the life force, the invisible rhythm that powers every living being. But what if every breath became a battle? For many afflicted with Leigh’s Syndrome, this is a daily struggle. Initially, the signs might be so subtle that they escape notice: an occasional shortness of breath, a slightly extended period of panting after play, or an unexpected bout of coughing.
However, with time, the frequency and intensity of these symptoms increase. The child may increasingly suffer from bouts of breathlessness, even during periods of rest. Night times become particularly challenging, with episodes of interrupted breathing or apnea.
The implications of these respiratory challenges aren’t restricted to discomfort. There’s a potential risk of decreased oxygen reaching the brain, further aggravating the neurological symptoms. The consistent struggle for breath also affects the child’s ability to engage in regular activities, play, or even communicate effectively, significantly impacting their quality of life. (6)
