8. Episodes of Vomiting and Diarrhea: Not Just a Stomach Bug
Every child faces their fair share of tummy troubles. However, recurrent episodes in children with Leigh’s Syndrome are not just about indigestion or a seasonal bug. It’s a more significant signal of metabolic disturbances and mitochondrial dysfunction inherent to the condition.
These episodes can be quite distressing. The child might experience bouts of unexplained vomiting, not linked to food intake or any discernible infection.
Diarrhea can be recurrent, leading to dehydration risks and nutritional deficits. More than the immediate symptoms, the concern lies in the prolonged impact on the child’s overall health. Frequent fluid loss, combined with a decreased appetite, can hinder growth, reduce immunity, and lead to a host of secondary complications. (8)
